1

Is Scratch Therapy like massage?

No, while massage targets muscles through deep kneading, scratch therapy works at the surface level of the skin. The goal isn’t to manipulate tissue, but to provide gentle, sensory-based touch that relaxes, soothes, and promotes a grounding sense of calm.

2

Is Scratch Therapy safe and hygienic?

Absolutely. Your comfort and safety are my top priorities. As a licensed esthetician, I bring the same professional care and sanitization standards from the skincare world into every scratch therapy session.

All nails and tools are thoroughly sanitized before each client, and gloves are available upon request. Scratch therapy is safe for most people, but if you’re unsure, reach out before booking and I’ll be happy to help you determine if it’s a good fit.

3

Who can benefit from Scratch Therapy?

Scratch therapy may be especially helpful for:

  • Anyone seeking stress relief and deep relaxation

  • People with ADHD or autism who enjoy sensory-based therapies

  • Individuals experiencing anxiety or overwhelm

  • Those with mild chronic pain or tension

4

What areas can be scratched?

Most clients choose from the following areas:

  • Scalp

  • Back

  • Arms

  • Hands

All services are upper body only and performed in a comfortable seated massage chair, with your chest resting forward for full support.

You’re welcome to customize your session by selecting your preferred areas and you can switch focus during the appointment if you’d like.

5

What tools are used?

Sessions are most often performed with natural-feel acrylic nails to create a light, soothing sensation (gloves can be worn upon request).

Other available tools may include:

  • Silicone bristle brushes

  • Feathers

  • Knitting needles (used gently for tracing)

  • Nail extenders

  • Fan brushes

Each tool is selected to provide different textures and sensations, allowing you to personalize your experience. You’re welcome to choose your preferred tools  and even switch during your session.

6

What should I wear?

Wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the areas you’d like scratched.

For example, a tank top or open-back shirt is ideal if you’d like back work.

For your comfort, a single-use paper gown can also be provided upon request.

What are the benefits of Scratch Therapy?

Scratch therapy goes beyond simple relaxation, it’s a unique sensory experience with a range of benefits for the body and mind:

  • Deep Relaxation & Stress Relief
Gentle, rhythmic scratching calms the nervous system, lowers stress hormones, and creates a soothing state of rest.

  • Mood Boosting
The light touch stimulates nerve endings, triggering the release of endorphins, the body’s natural “feel-good” chemicals helping you feel lighter and more uplifted.

  • Sensory Nourishment
For many people, scratch therapy evokes comforting sensations similar to ASMR, offering grounding, euphoric “chills” that calm the mind.

  • Supports Mental Health
Clients experiencing anxiety, overwhelm, or sensory overload often find scratch therapy a safe, grounding way to reset.

  • Soothes Physical Tension
While not a deep-tissue technique, scratch therapy eases surface-level tension in the scalp, back, neck, and arms, areas that commonly hold stress.

  • Accessible Comfort
Scratch therapy provides the nostalgic, comforting experience many remember from childhood, but in a safe, professional setting designed for adults.

Who should avoid Scratch Therapy?

Scratch therapy is safe and relaxing for most people, but there are certain situations where it may not be the best fit. Please avoid booking if you have:

  • Skin Concerns: Active eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, open wounds, or any type of skin infection.

  • Allergies or Sensitivities: Known reactions to tools, lotions, or materials used during sessions.

  • Neurological Conditions: Neuropathy, extreme sensitivity to touch, or certain sensory processing challenges that may make the experience uncomfortable.

  • Medical Issues: Recent surgery, blood clots, or suspicious skin lesions that require medical clearance.

  • Emotional Sensitivities: Trauma-related aversions to touch or discomfort with light tactile stimulation.

  • Personal Preference: If you strongly dislike light touch or are very ticklish, scratch therapy may not feel enjoyable.

How can I book a session?

Right now, Scratch Therapy LA is available as a mobile service, so I bring the experience directly to you. Sessions can be booked for in-home appointments, private events, or group gatherings.

I’ll also be hosting pop-up experiences around Los Angeles in the future. If you’d like to be the first to know about locations, special events, or community sessions, be sure to join the email list for updates.
